I work out twice a week with a trainer. Being a dentist is hard physical work. Being in shape makes it possible for me to do the work and last through the day. Exercise is also a great stress-reliever. It's stressful dealing with patients, staff and day-to-day running a business.
I also think I'm more genuine when I tell a patient to care for herself and I'm caring for myself. Am I perfect at it - no way! I have better and worse times of taking care of me. But when I take care of myself - which includes a decent diet and exercise - I make a commitment to myself. When I talk to a patient about committing to ongoing periodontal maintenance or a restorative treatment plan, I'm asking her to commit to caring for herself. When I've already committed to my own well being, I'm not asking a patient to do something I wouldn't do myself. It makes asking for commitment easier for me - and patients are more likely to commit to me - and themselves to good dental health!
